VIDEO FAQ Questions:
How do I order your service ?
Simple - Just head back to the home page and then along the top navigation bar simply click on "prices" and follow the instructions for an immediate cost estimation. If you want to request a formal quotation at this time you can simply submit your request using the button on the cost estimator and we will come back to you with a formal quotation valid for 30 days. Or simply fill out the form, print it off and send in your films. We will contact you when they arrive to discuss your project in detail.
What format of video tape to you transfer ?
We currently support all major video formats including VHS, VHS/C, Betamax, MiniDV MicroDV, Video8, Hi8, Digital8, HDV, DigiBeta, Betacam SP/SX, Umatic and many many formats. Just give us a call if your tape format is not listed and we will advise you.
What is the tape is damaged ?
If your tape is broken then we do offer a tape splicing service using specialised equipment to ensure that your tape is then safe to play again. Our splicing service is complimentary when used in conjunction with one of our transfer services. The only exception is a rare format called MicroDV which is so small that tape repairs are NOT practical.
Do you transfer footage from memory cards ?
Yes we support all major formats of memory cards including SD, MiniSD, MMC, MicroSD, Memory Stick Pro, Memory Stick Duo, Compact Flash, xD Picture Card and GoPro Systems. Also we can take footage from mobile phones or camcorders with internal HDDs. All this footage can be transferred to DVD, Blu-Ray or Video File,
Can you transfer footage from a GoPro?
Yes. We get asked a lot to transfer HD footage from a GoPro system to a format better suited for long term archiving. Also all the individual clips are then consolidated together into a single file for easy viewing. We support all current models of GoPro systems.
My footage is recorded in high definition, can you help get this onto DVD ?
Yes. We offer a service that allows your HD footage to be down converted so that it will playback from a DVD. The footage will retain the same aspect ratio and will be 100% of the original content. Although downscaling will reduce the quality to SD level this is still the most versatile format for sharing content.
The original tape is very grainy can you improve the this ?
We operate some very high precision video processors that analyse your video content and then automatically apply video enhancements without losing any picture detail. Some cheaper transfer systems simply soften the image to give the effect of less noise but in reality the picture quality is awful. We use Black Magic Teranex 3D processors to provide the very best in image quality restoration. And what's more its a standard service offered by Images4life at no additional cost.
Do you charge extra to convert to wide-screen?
Absolutely NOT - This is your choice. We use some high precision video processors to change your video aspect ratio into something more pleasurable when viewing on a wide-screen TV. If you want us to convert the footage from standard definition 4:3 aspect ration to Standard Definition 14:9 then just add this to your comments on the order form.
Will up-scaled video look the same as true HD ?
Unfortunately not and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If up-scaled SD footage was the same quality as native/true HD then why was HD ever invented ?? The benefits of up-scaling include a more native pixel count when viewing SD footage on HD equipment, and also also that we have the ability to convert the aspect ratio from 4:3 to 14:9 which provides a more pleasurable viewing experience.
Do you use standalone DVD / Blu-Ray recorders to record my tape ?
Absolutely NOT. Unlike some of the very cheap services being offered on the internet we can assure you that all our video, cine and slideshow transfers to DVD/Blu-Ray are hand coded and programmed to your exact requirements. We do NOT simply play and record your footage on a domestic video to dvd recorder and use cheap 12p disks. All our transfers are manually monitored, image enhanced, hand programmed and created on high quality DVD/Blu-Ray disks including a full colour thermal print ( NOT Cheap InkJet or Labels )
Will the DVD/Blu-Ray be customised with my required title ?
Yes. As standard we take your required project title and add this to the DVD/Blu-Ray Menu System. Also we thermally print this onto the DVD/Blu-Ray disk and also onto the DVD/Blu-Ray insert. Everything comes back fully customised.
Will the DVD/Blu-Ray play on domestic household DVD players ?
Yes. Because we manually program each DVD/Blu-Ray disk we are able to ensure that the disks comply with the worldwide standard for DVD/Bly-Ray playback. Companies that simply use DVD/Blu-Ray standalone recorders are more prone to compatibility problems.
How much video can I get on a single DVD Disk ?
We will put a maximum of 120 minutes of footage on each DVD. Once you go above the 120 minute barrier the video needs to be compressed to a level that effects image quality so as a company we will NOT compromise on quality and will span the video onto a second and third DVD as required.
How much video can I get on a single Blu-Ray Disk ?
We will put a maximum of 150 minutes of footage on each Blu-Ray. Once you go above the 150 minute barrier the video needs to be compressed to a level that effects image quality so as a company we will NOT compromise on quality and will span the video onto a second and third Blu-Ray as required.
What format of digital video files can you provide ?
We support all major video formats and codecs. Whilst we will always provide consultancy and recommendations on the most suitable format for your reeds we will also take instruction from you and prepare video files to your exact specification. We offer just to name a few
.MOV, .AVI, .MP4, .WMV, .WEBM, .OGG, .MPG, .MKV, .M4A, .SWF, .FLV and many many more......
Can you convert commercial video tape formats ?
Yes we support a variety of commercial video formats such as Digital Betacam, Betacam SP/SX and DVCAM and others. If your video tape format is not listed then please contact the office for more details.
Why do you charge per hour of video and not by tape ?
Its unusual that video tapes are completely full, so why pay for a full tape transfer when you only have 15 minutes of footage. Its much fairer to charge per hour of video. Normally companies who charge per tape do so because they use domestic DVD or Blu-Ray standalone recorders and do not have the ability to edit the footage into more cost effective solutions. We understand that its not always possible to provide a total number of hours prior to shipment of the tapes so we are more than happy to provide a cost estimate before starting any work. ONLY PAY FOR WHAT FOOTAGE YOU HAVE...
Can you supply both DVD/Blu-Ray and High Quality Video Files ?
Absolutely. Because we digitise all footage into QuickTime ProRes422HQ we then have the ability to create multiple output formats whilst still maintaining the highest level of picture quality. Some companies who offer combined DVD/Video file packages only offer MPEG2 digital files which are heavily compressed, if you want to retain the highest level of quality have the digital files supplied in QuickTime ProRes422HQ or QuickTime422LT. Both are PC and MAC compatible.
Can you convert High Definition footage to Standard Definition?
Yes. Many modern video camera's and phone's record footage in full HD, which is great for playing back on your own TV or transferring to Blu-Ray. However for sharing the footage with the family its probably better to use DVD format as this is more versatile and most people own DVD players.
We can take your HD footage and downscale this to SD for distribution on DVD whilst retaining the correct aspect ratio and highest possible picture quality for DVD.
I want to send or receive video tapes from other countries, can you convert the formats ?
Yes - Wed offer a full worldwide conversion service for vieo tapes, DVDs, Blu-Rays and video files from any country to any other country. So if you live in Europe and have footage you want share with family and friends in the USA then we can convert from PAL to NTSC. Just call us for more details.
Do you copy video tapes or DVDs with Copyright and/or copy protection ?
The only time we will duplicate copyrighted material is if the customer provides a letter from the copyright owner stating that they have permission. We will also contact the copyright owner independently for approval prior to any work being started. We take copyright very seriously and will not deviate from the law, so please don't ask.
